In 2015, Andrey Retrovsky fell to his death while trying to take an ‘extreme selfie’ from the roof of a nine-story building.

Andrey climbed to the top of the building in Vologda, Russia, to add the selfie to his collection of photographs in dangerous places.

But, as he attempted the picture in the fading light of the evening, the boy slipped and was fell.

Although the fall would have killed him instantly, he landed in bushes which slightly cushioned the impact.

However, doctors were unable to save him due to his extensive and severe injuries.

Andrey Retrovsky, a 17-year-old thrill-seeker, was known for his love of scaling buildings and balancing on ledges to stage terrifying shots.

His daring stunts were part of a larger trend in Russia, where a group of teens known as “Roofers” bonded over taking daring Instagram photos from the roofs of high-rise buildings, often after sneaking in illegally.

The incident involving Andrey Retrovsky was not an isolated one. Selfie-related injuries and deaths in Russia were on the rise at the time.

In the year prior to Andrey’s accident, 10 Russians died and more than 100 were injured while taking selfies.

This alarming trend prompted the Russian government to launch the Safe Selfie campaign, which featured the tagline, "even a million likes on social media are not worth your life".
