In 1989, in the small village of Miyakoji, Japan, primary school teacher Yumi Tanaka made a peculiar discovery as she looked into the toilet bowl – a floating black shoe. Investigating further, she found a man's body in the sewer tank outside.

The body was removed and found to be in an unusual position, somehow the man managed to squeeze through the 14" diameter septic opening. It was later determined that he had entered the waste tank, likely attempting to peer up the toilet when women were using it.

After meticulous cleaning, the body was identified as 26-year-old Naoyuki Kanno. He likely passed away from hypothermia.

Naoyuki Kanno was not just an ordinary resident of Miyakoji. He was a well-known figure in the village, working as a sales manager for a company supporting the Nuclear Power Plants. His reputation was that of a reliable and sociable person, often helping out villagers in need. This made the circumstances of his death even more baffling, as it was hard for the villagers to associate him with the act of voyeurism.

The discovery of Kanno’s body raised several questions. The police concluded that he died from hypothermia, but there were no signs of forced trauma on the body or any indication that he was fighting off any assailant from being pushed into the pipe. The only injuries found were a few scratches on his elbow and legs. This led to speculation about the circumstances leading to his death, with some questioning the police’s conclusion of an accidental death.

Kanno was last seen on February 24th, four days before his body was found. He had told his father that he would be going out for a while. His parents did not find it alarming when he did not return home that night, as he was an adult who often went out.

However, when they were unable to contact him for three days, they searched for him and found his car in a farmhouse parking lot with the keys still in it. Kanno was nowhere to be seen until the next day, when his body was discovered.
