The First American citizen killed by ISIS. News footage from 2014 shows American journalist James Foley moments before his execution in response to American airstrikes in Iraq.

News footage from 2014 shows American journalist James Foley moments before his execution in August 2014, reportedly in response to American airstrikes in Iraq. He became the first American citizen killed by ISIS.

While working as a freelance war correspondent during the Syrian Civil War, he was abducted on November 22, 2012, in northwestern Syria and held captive until his execution.

In the weeks and months leading up to his tragic end, Foley was subjected to severe physical and mental torture. He was kept in a cell with 18 other captives, starved, beaten, and even subjected to mock executions and waterboarding.

Foley’s captors reportedly found photographs on his laptop that he had taken of US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. These images were described by his captors as "images glorifying the American crusaders."

Many of the hostages, including Foley, converted to Islam during their captivity. Foley reportedly took the name Abu Hamza. This conversion, according to a Belgian former hostage, was sincere in Foley’s case.
