This is Grigori Perelman, a mathematician who refused to accept a fields medal and the $1,000,000 prize 

In 2002, Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman published the first of three groundbreaking papers offering a proof for the famous Poincaré conjecture, one of the toughest unsolved problems in math. 

He was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in 2006 and 1M reward from the Clay Mathematics Institute- he refused to accept both.

Winner of the Fields Medal (one of the most honorable awards in mathematics). And winner of a million dollars for solving the "Poincaré Conjecture", one of the seven problems of the millennium.


He rejected both awards and currently lives a simple life, isolated from the mathematical community, yet he is one of the greatest minds of this century.

Why did Grigori Perelman refuse $1 million?

According to Interfax, Perelman refused to accept the Millennium prize in July 2010. 

He considered the decision of the Clay Institute unfair for not sharing the prize with Richard S. Hamilton, and stated that "the main reason is my disagreement with the organized mathematical community.


What is Grigori Perelman doing now?

According to the most recent publications in the Russian media, Perelman lives in the city of Saint Petersburg and mostly cares for his elderly mother.


He doesn't really do math anymore, as he thinks that his life's work is complete. So, now he is semi-retired.
